It's Heating Season! Dangers of CO

The cold weather has finally arrived! This means that residents will be turning on their heating systems for the first time in a very long time. One unfortunate by-product of the heating season is Carbon Monoxide. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that is colorless, odorless, tasteless and non-irritating. When breathed into the body, CO combines with the blood and prevents it from absorbing oxygen. When this oxygen-deficient blood reaches the heart and brain, it can damage these organs and cause illness or death.

Possible Sources of COHow to Prevent CO Poisoning
    • Gas stoves
    • Hot water heaters
    • Fireplaces
    • Lawnmowers
    • Pilot lights
    • Gas or oil furnaces
    • Car exhaust fumes
    • Wood-burning stoves
    • Charcoal
    • Gas space heaters
    • Tobacco smoke
    • Inspect flues and chimneys for cracks, corrosion, holes, debris or blockages.
    • Buy fuel-powered heaters with automatic shut-off features.
    • Fuel heaters in well-ventilated areas.
    • Service heaters before the first use of winter season
    • Open windows periodically to air out your house. Homes with energy-efficient insulation can trap CO-polluted air inside.
    • Use a gas stove for cooking purposes only.
    • Operate gas-burning appliances in a well-ventilated room.
    • Never leave a car running in a garage.
    • Use charcoal grills outdoors, never indoors.
    • Install and maintain carbon monoxide detectors.

    Installing a CO Detector
Install CO Detectors near bedroom areas and family rooms. Do not install them near air vents or fans. Place them in the center of the room where they can measure the overall general atmospheres. For extra protection, place one about 15 feet away from your home’s heat source.

To avoid nuisance alarms, do not put a CO detector in the kitchen, garage, utility room, basement, bathroom or unventilated rooms where cleaning supplies are kept. Chemical fumes, humidity and very hot or very cold temperatures will affect the performance of a detector.

If you feel ill or smell natural gas, always call 9-1-1 immediately after evacuating to a safe area.

Mass Decon Trailer and Driver Training

Last Monday, Chief David Stormer and Deputy Chief John Stormer from the New Milford Fire Department reviewed the equipment and procedures related to the Tri-Boro South Mass Decon Trailer with members of the Oradell Fire Department. This trailer was purchased by the State of NJ to assist in decontamination of people involved in large scale disasters and incidents. • Water heater (how to set it up to be fed water from an engine)
    • Tyvex suits to be worn by fire personnel
    • A roller system to aid in moving victims through the decon area
    • How the trailer and its equipment would operate at a mass decontamination operation

Although the New Milford FD maintains the equipment, this trailer can respond statewide when called and is one of six that was acquired by Bergen County. Thanks again Dave and John!

Driver training on both E-23 & T-21 was held under the watchful eye of Ex-Chief F. Gangemi.
